Why Children's Eyes Are Losing Their Natural Coordination
The human visual system is designed so that both eyes move together as a perfectly coordinated pair. These synchronized movements, known as **conjugate eye movements**, allow us to maintain single, comfortable binocular vision. However, in recent years, I have observed an increasing number of children presenting with symptoms that suggest this natural coordination is breaking down earlier than ever before.
One of the major contributors appears to be **prolonged screen exposure during early childhood**.
Children who spend several hours each day on mobile phones, tablets, or other digital devices often complain of eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, watering, intermittent double vision, and difficulty concentrating. This collection of symptoms is commonly referred to as **asthenopia**.
When asthenopia develops, the visual system becomes fatigued. As fatigue increases, the eyes may no longer maintain perfect binocular coordination. The brain struggles to keep both eyes working together, and the normal conjugate eye movements begin to dissociate. Initially, this dissociation may only appear during prolonged near work or at the end of the day, but with continued stress it can become increasingly frequent.
In many children, this manifests as **latent eye deviations (phorias)**. If the visual demand continues to exceed the child's ability to maintain fusion, these latent deviations may decompensate into **manifest deviations (tropias)**. While not every child with heavy screen use develops a squint, excessive visual fatigue can certainly reduce the reserve needed to maintain comfortable binocular vision in susceptible individuals.
Children who have **well-managed screen time**, regular outdoor play, and frequent breaks generally appear to maintain more stable binocular function compared with children who spend prolonged periods on digital devices with minimal physical activity.
It is important to note that strabismus and binocular vision disorders have multiple causes, including genetics, refractive errors, neurological conditions, and developmental factors. Screen use alone is not the sole cause. However, excessive near work and prolonged digital device use can contribute to visual fatigue and may worsen pre-existing binocular instability in vulnerable children.

Protecting Children's Binocular Vision
Parents can take practical steps to reduce unnecessary visual stress:
* Avoid giving smartphones and tablets to very young children whenever possible.
* Limit recreational screen time according to your pediatrician's and public health recommendations.
* Encourage daily outdoor activities, which are associated with healthier visual development.
* Follow the **20-20-20 rule** during prolonged near work: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
* Maintain an appropriate viewing distance and good posture while reading or using digital devices.
* Ensure adequate room lighting and avoid prolonged use in dark environments.
* Schedule regular comprehensive eye examinations, particularly if your child complains of headaches, eye strain, closing one eye, frequent blinking, poor concentration, or an eye that occasionally drifts.
Healthy binocular vision develops through balanced visual experiences—not endless hours focused on a small screen. While technology has become part of modern education and entertainment, it should never replace outdoor play, physical activity, and healthy visual habits.
Early recognition of eye strain and binocular vision problems allows timely intervention and may help prevent progression from visual fatigue to decompensated phorias or tropias in susceptible children.
