Ozempic Glaucoma Symptoms and Treatment: Why High Eye Pressure Should Never Be Ignored

Published on by Dr Muhammad Azeem with the help of AI which helped him organise his thoughts

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can damage the optic nerve for years before you notice a problem.

Once vision is lost, it cannot be recovered, so early detection matters.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, the cable that carries images from your eye to your brain. It is usually linked to raised intraocular pressure (IOP).

Normal eye pressure is roughly 10–21 mmHg. Readings well above this can injure the nerve over time.

Common Glaucoma Symptoms

Early glaucoma may cause no symptoms at all. When symptoms appear, they can include:

  • Gradual loss of side (peripheral) vision
  • A feeling that vision is “reduced” in one eye, even when the chart reads well
  • Persistent watering, itching or eye discomfort (these are non-specific and are often caused by other conditions)
  • Halos around lights, headaches or eye pain in some types of glaucoma

Remember:

Good reading-chart vision does not rule out glaucoma. Central vision is often preserved until the disease is advanced.

How Is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

A proper assessment combines several tests:

  • Eye pressure measurement (tonometry): checks for raised IOP.
  • Optic nerve examination: looks for deep “cupping” of the optic disc.
  • OCT RNFL scan: measures the thickness of the nerve fibre layer and shows structural damage.
  • Visual field test (perimetry): maps your side vision and shows functional loss.

No single test is enough. Doctors compare all of them together to confirm the diagnosis and its severity.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

Treatment aims to lower eye pressure and protect the remaining vision. Depending on the case, this may include:

  • Prescription eye drops that reduce fluid production or improve drainage
  • Oral medication to lower pressure quickly when it is very high
  • Laser treatment or surgery if medicines are not enough
  • Regular follow-up to monitor pressure, the optic nerve and visual fields

When pressure is very high, prompt assessment by a glaucoma specialist is important.

Important:

Never start, stop or change glaucoma medication without your doctor’s advice.

Can Medications Like Semaglutide Cause Glaucoma?

Patients sometimes ask whether newer medicines, including semaglutide (Ozempic), might affect the eyes.

At present, a causal link between semaglutide and glaucoma has not been proven. If you take any long-term medication and notice changes in your vision, tell your eye doctor. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Lifestyle and General Health

Glaucoma care goes beyond the eye. Your doctor may also advise:

  • Having blood pressure checked and controlled by a physician
  • Working toward a healthy weight through balanced diet and regular exercise
  • Attending every follow-up visit, even when you feel well

Who Should Get Screened?

Get your eyes checked promptly if you:

  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • Are over 40
  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Notice any change in vision

Frequently Asked Questions

Can glaucoma be cured?

No, but treatment can slow or stop progression and protect the vision you still have.

Can glaucoma happen with normal-looking vision?

Yes. Central vision can stay sharp while side vision slowly narrows.

How often should I have follow-up visits?

Your ophthalmologist will set this according to your pressure and the state of your optic nerve and visual fields.
